The other day a friend posted on her Facebook status about the awkwardness of acquaintances who wouldn’t shake her hand previously, thinking it’s OK to touch her tummy now because she’s pregnant… why else?! Why is it that people think that when you’re pregnant (and the little person growing inside you is already seriously impinging on your personal quiet time) that it’s OK to invade your external personal space as well??? And not only do they invade your personal space, but they do it without asking!!! I mean… it’s one thing coming from close family and friends, but another thing entirely when it’s from acquaintances!!! Continue Reading…

I came across an awesome tip (lost the link for it, but I’ll update if I find it again) for nappy changes I just had to share… we’re not at that discovery stage yet, but I’ve changed the nappies of friends and family who were… you know it, when they discover they can reach the mess they just made in their nappy and want to explore it!!! As if poopey nappy changes with wriggly/ screaming kids weren’t bad enough… not only do you have to contend with their poop getting on you, but then you have to start finding creative ways to combat their poop getting all over them and worse yet… in their mouth! EEEEEWWWW!!!!

What do to… what to do… Continue Reading…

Ever struggled over how to instil values in your kids? I came across a brilliant blog on loving the standard which shares some very sage advice! I guess we don’t approach a job as something that needs to be beaten into submission to suit us, so where did the concept of children should be seen and not heard ever come from? Continue Reading…

Movies for Mums

[This is part of the Out and About with Kids series]

Becoming a Mum can really turn your whole word on its head! So it was a welcome initiative when one of the other women in my Mum’s group suggested heading to the movies! What?! You mean we can still do normal things?!?! How novel!!!

So I checked it out… it’s supposed to be great (albeit slightly limited in terms of allocated sessions and thus movies you can see… but hey it’s normal… so that’s what we’re focusing on alright?!). I’m told that they adjust the conditions to suit the needs of Mums with bubs/ young kids (a nice little change to most of the world!) with lower sound levels that get monitored more closely than usual and they keep the lights dim for feeding and nappies changes (oh yipee!!! I get to change a nappy while watching a movie… ain’t that grand?!). So while I’m sure we all deserve a whole lot more ‘me time’ than we are getting now… it’s a normal activity that can help you get through your day and come to terms with your life having been turned upside down! :-) We’ll all be in the same boat once there… so don’t worry about crying babies, walking/ rocking bub to sleep… whatever it takes huh?! Poonami

I had a lovely morning playing with my three-month old… and then we went out to have lunch with hubby and ended up heading back to his work to visit hubby’s colleague’s who were keen to see our son again! He did a #2 before we left the house… and generally his #2′s come in twos or threes… so I knew there would be more… but he’d done a fairly decent sized one, so I didn’t anticipate it being too bad. I walked around the shops for a bit while my son slept and then we headed home… he wasn’t very happy by the time I got him out of the car, having gone from sleeping to starving in about .02 seconds as they do at this age! After his feed he was lying on the spare bed with some toys while I checked email and fb next to him… he was getting a bit whingey… and then it started… that ominous sound… the squelching, sloshing that you just know is a gorgeous mustard colour departing his tiny little backside! It was quite a decent sized sound!!! And then… there it was again… and again… and again!!! I was scared by this stage… do I go and attempt a nappy change mid way through? Continue Reading…

M.U.M.

June 15, 2011 — Leave a comment

I was given a new nickname tonight! With a three month old, my preference is to be ‘mummy’… But I’ve got to hand it to hubby, the new nickname was just a little amusing! M.U.M.! And no… it is not short for mother or an alternative to mummy! It captures the essense of my motherhood experience so far – Mobile Udder Machine! :-)

I guess if you think about it… None of us need a model’s figure to be a ‘yummy mummy’ as most of us at least begin motherhood with the ability to be nicknamed M.M.M. (valid alternative to yummy) – Mobile Milk Machine! ;-)

Heard any other great nicknames for mothers?

[This is part of the Out and About with Kids series]

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the 5 weeks of Mothers Group (oops… how non-PC of me… “New Parents Group”) facilitated by the MACH nurse! It is definitely a blessing to have these great services available… I highly recommend that every new mother takes advantage of the great support services available to them in the Canberra region!

I’ve been blessed with a great group of Mums and bubs that have gelled together really well, some weeks I think our lovely MACH nurse facilitator would have preferred if we didn’t all chat together quite so easily… she might have had an easier time getting through the planned program! :-) Sharing our experiences as first time mothers has led to much hilarity and I think I’m safe in saying that we’ve all learned a lot over these past 5 weeks! But it doesn’t have to end there… Continue Reading…

Where did my brain go?

Seriously… I thought I was a bit forgetful during my pregnancy (more so towards the end)… but with an 11 week old I’m having SERIOUS difficulty in locating the grey matter that used to abide in my skull!!!

The other day I was chatting to my husband about how our son went during the day and I asked him what the time was so that I could establish when he was likely to wake for his next feed… all good (thankfully the benefit of feeding my son wherever I am in the house is that it’s easier to remember the last feed!). So in the next breath I moved to thinking about what we were going to watch on TV and asked my husband what the time was so I knew when to turn on the TV. He stopped… Continue Reading…

SMS scam…

May 20, 2011 — Leave a comment

I know we’d all love to win lots of money… it’d be almost like having a money tree in your back yard!

I just got a sms telling me I’d won lots of money… hmmm… the number it came from was +27 (South Africa), the email address to claim your prize is a UK-based hotmail address and the prize money amount is in USD! Gee… I wonder which part tipped me off to it being a scam?!?!?!

I wish my email address and telephone numbers were only used for genuine contact… I’m not interested in your bogus scams thanks very much!

I caught up with a good friend this week…we began by reading Philippians 1:1-11! The discussion that ensued for most of our time together focused on Philippians 1:9-11:

“9And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

It’s quite a challenging little chunk of scripture if you ask me! As a new Mum I’m highly sleep deprived and still very much trying to work out what having a family of three looks like! I really started thinking about this in earnest while listening to Focus on the Family on 1WAY FM 91.9 & 94.3 in the car on Saturday… they were talking about family and how you should prioritise your marriage above your children because it is in the best interests of your children to do so! That your children will feel safe and secure in the knowledge of your love and ability to provide for them when your marriage is going well and you can demonstrate a healthy, loving relationship to your children. This had been floating around in the back of my mind for a few days… Continue Reading…
