[This is part of the Out and About with Kids series]
It’s never too early to start reading!
I have very fond memories of our local library where I grew up in South Africa. It was quite a large building that was quiet and cool in the summer time, there were lots of large dark wooden bookshelves, green carpets and these gorgeous big bay windows with green seat covers. I remember going to the library regularly (every fortnight or so) and taking out the maximum number of books we were allowed with our little pink/green/yellow pocket library cards that the borrow card from the book would go into so the library knew which books we had out (I know… I must be a dinosaur because they were still using a manual paper system)! I loved the smell and feel of the library, I loved the time we got to peruse the shelves and pick the books we wanted to read! I still have vivid memories of where some of my favourite books were located on the library shelves! It’s little wonder that I still have a very deep love for books! One of my favourite children’s series’ were the Topsy & Tim books.
I have such fond memories of reading them that I want to share them with Cheeky Monkey! There are many other fantastic books for children, some classic favourites Cheeky Monkey has been given include: The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Libraries ACT sessions for kids
Consequently I am so pleased to see that Libraries ACT runs Giggle & Wiggle for children aged 0 – 2 to help develop children’s love for books. I’m looking forward to share my love for books and all you can learn from them with Cheeky Monkey! It’s learning through language play – using interactive rhymes, songs, games, and stories specifically chosen for children aged 0 – 2 and their parents. Session content is repetitive to help with language development. Giggle & Wiggle includes: alphabet recognition, shapes, colours, numbers. There is a lot of repetition – the same or similar content – as this is an important way for young children to learn. It also helps babies and parents to participate by singing along and responding to questions. We’ve tried it out and it’s heaps of fun!
Libraries ACT also offers Story Time sessions for 3 – 5 year olds which I’ve blogged about here.
Libraries ACT’s website lists details for all the Giggle & Wiggle sessions.
